The holiday season can be challenging to maintain your health and fitness. Between social events and opportunities to indulge yourself, it’s easy to sabotage your health routine. But there are ways to make your fitness vacation safe.

• As the highly contagious Omicron variant spreads, experts are urging people to update face masks.

• Archbishop Desmond Tutu, an anti-apartheid leader and voice of justice in South Africa, has died at the age of 90.

• Airlines have canceled thousands of flights as staff and crew members call in sick during the Omicron climb.

• More than 30 people were reported to have died in an attack in Myanmar and Save the Children staff were missing.

• European governments condemned the arrival of “mercenary troops” in Mali, West Africa.

Monday

It is the verdict when the jury reassembles in the separate trials of Ghislaine Maxwell and Elizabeth Holmes. Maxwell is charged with sex trafficking while Holmes is charged with fraud. The juries will continue deliberations after a vacation break.

A hearing is scheduled to deal with a motion by a Colorado prosecutor asking the court to reconsider Rogel Aguilera-Medero’s verdict. The truck driver was sentenced to 110 years in prison for an accident on Interstate 70 in Denver that killed four people.

Los Angeles police are expected to release bodycam videos, emergency recordings, radio broadcasts, CCTV and other evidence from the shooting in which a police officer died in a Burlington coat factory. She was in a locker room with her mother. The police had shot at a man who was suspected of assaulting a woman in the store, it said.

In Myanmar, a court could reach a verdict in the recent trial of the deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. She is charged with owning unlicensed walkie-talkies and other foreign equipment which, if convicted, could face years of imprisonment.

Saturday

The Democrat Eric Adams becomes the new Mayor of New York City. A private swearing-in ceremony traditionally takes place at midnight. Adams canceled a public event due to the rise in coronavirus cases.
