Ilkay Gundogan’s season in Manchester City has not really got off to a good start since scoring the first goal in Arsenal’s 5-0 win at Etihad Stadium.

The German suffered a groin strain in the 0-0 draw against Southampton and just returned to action in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Burnley.

Gundogan marked his return to the starting XI by scoring the evening’s first goal against Brighton. The midfielder took advantage of a goalkeeping mistake and was there to tip home.

In an interview with Manchester City after the game, the 31-year-old talked about his return to fitness and how nice it was to be back on the scorers’ list straight away.

“Of course it’s never really good to be outside for a few weeks in the early stages of the season,” admitted Gündogan.

“But I tried to keep my feeling up and stay the best I could during that time, work hard and today was a very good move for me.

“Having 40 or 45 minutes during the week in the Champions League was good, and then the start today was even better. This is how it works, when you come from an injury, you come back step by step.”

Gündogan will now try to slowly rebuild his playing strength before an important series of games in three competitions.

The German was a key player in Manchester City’s 2020/21 title winning season and proved to be a reliable goalscorer and valuable member of the starting XI.
