Work on the largest expansion project in the history of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln is in full swing.

The three-story extension, a 112,000-square-foot patient wing southwest of the existing 460,000-square-foot hospital at 5401 South St., is expected to open next year. There will be 59 new, larger and more modern patient rooms to replace those built in the 1970s.

Upon completion of the $ 57 million project, the old patient rooms will be converted into storage and support rooms and a new therapy gym will be set up, which should be completed by January 2023. The project also includes a new main entrance.
