NORMAN, Oklahoma (KFOR) – The City of Norman has put an emphasis on community health with programs like Move with the Mayor and now a gym that’s free for everyone.

The city had unveiled a new gym in Frances Cate Park. It’s an outdoor gym where residents can experience a variety of bodyweight exercises right in their neighborhood.

Fight or Flight gym owner James White first saw the fitness court model on a visit to San Francisco. Fascinated by the design, he knew it had to be in Norman.

“I was fortunate enough to be involved early in the talks between the City of Norman and the National Fitness Council on the project to bring this type of fitness facility to Norman,” said White.

The newly established fitness court has seven stations. With three minutes each, you can do a full-body workout in around 20 minutes.

“We want a healthy community,” said Jason Olsen, director of parks and recreation for the City of Norman. “We want people to come out and exercise in a healthy, safe manner regardless of their income, and this is a great place to exercise.”

Olsen said the fitness court is the latest addition to the City of Norman’s health focus.

“The City of Norman has 65 parks, a golf course, a swimming pool, all of these different ways to get outside, stay healthy, and get out and keep moving,” said Olsen.

The grant of over $ 125,000 was made possible by the Community Block Grant, which is a federal grant that also enables things like housing people or equipping parks.

“The community block grant essentially ensures that certain parts of cities and towns have access to amenities that will help them stay healthier and have a better lifestyle and quality of life,” said Olsen.

The new fitness court also has a corresponding app that people can use to follow free workouts that are based on the machines on the court.
