The Orland Fire District responded to Life Time Fitness, 16333 LaGrange Road at 7:18 pm on Friday evening April 16, 2021 for an automatic fire alarm from the property.
On arrival, the evacuation was in progress. Firefighters entered the building to investigate the source of the alarm. The crews found smoke in the back of the building near the men’s and women’s locker room.
In search of the source of smoke, the crews began to pull the covers in the changing rooms. Fire service companies found active fire above the suspended ceiling.

The fire was extinguished with hand ropes from fire fighting equipment.
The fire had burned in the void between the false ceiling and the second floor. This area was above the sprinklers and smoke alarms. An air-treated smoke alarm was activated to alert the fire brigade to smoke in the building.
The alarm was upgraded to a box alarm due to the size of the building and the amount of smoke that had to be removed throughout the building. The on-site fire service companies have carried out a major overhaul to ensure the fire does not extend to the second floor of the facility. The cause of the fire was the accumulation of lint from the dryers that had spread in the ceiling space.
Orland Fire was supported by our neighbors from Mokena Fire, Palos Fire, Lockport Fire, Frankfort Fire, Country Club Hills Fire and New Lenox Fire while other fire departments arrived at our fire stations for mutual assistance and other service requests. The shop is closed until repairs can be made.
