SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Everyone who lives in the Ozarks knows that severe thunderstorms vary in severity. The hazards vary with each storm such as tornadoes, widespread rectilinear winds, large hailstorms, clouds to the ground, and lightning floods.

The National Weather Service developed a new system on August 2, 2021 to support different degrees of severity in a storm. This system shows different types of severity levels and the possible effects depending on the storm. This classification helps determine whether a storm is more destructive and how urgent it is.
