BRISTOL – Area officials and supporters celebrated a ribbon cutting and grand opening of 6 Nutrition Thursday.
The business provides specialized protein shakes and dietary consultation services, said owner Kirsten Oliver. She said she started the business after taking her own weight loss journey where she lost over 100 pounds.
“In that, I couldn’t find places that had sugar-free options or that had really healthy options with transparent ingredients,” she said. “Creating a product that used really simple ingredients that was still sugar free, I’m not diabetic but I have family who are diabetic, I just wanted to create options for those that need that.”
Oliver said that while in Bristol, she found there weren’t many services similar to the ones 6 Nutrition provides outside of gyms.
“I grew up in Wolcott so I’m pretty local,” she said. “When we found the location, it was just perfect to be on Route 6.”
Despite being located on Farmington Avenue, otherwise known as US Route 6, the store is not named for the road.
“One thing that we’re very passionate about here is support of our community and our first responders, especially our police officers,” said the owner. “I think in today’s age, we need to give them the most respect we can. They help us and the community so much.”
The six in 6 Nutrition is a reference to the saying “got your six” often meant to say that one has someone’s back.
The shop had a soft opening in December and wanted to make certain it had a nice day for its grand opening.
“We’re now offering nutrition coaching, one-on-one. I have a certification in nutrition,” said Oliver. The service helps others lose, gain or maintain their weight.
The store is currently open Monday through Friday at 6 am Monday, Tuesday and Friday it closes at 2 pm Wednesday and Thursday closes at 6 pm and Saturday is open 9 am to 3 pm
“The more that we fill empty spaces in town the better for everybody from the taxpayer to people looking for things,” said Mayor Jeff Caggiano. “Route 6 is obviously our main corridor where we have a lot of business and that’s great. When I look at something like this by the way of product, we have other stuff like this on the other side of town but not this side and that’s great.”
The mayor continued by saying the city wanted to bring as many businesses to Bristol as possible.
“Healthy foods, we’ve got to move those in,” he said. “I think we should all be looking after our own health, and post-pandemic, we’ve got to control as much as we can because sometimes (health) is not that controllable.”
He also said he was pleasantly surprised to hear about the business’ support for first responders.
“They’re under tough times. They’ve (police) been restricted on what they can do and the more we support them, the better,” said the mayor.
