Fitness can be intimidating, which is why people are sometimes reluctant to attend the Omni Circle Group’s weekly “bootcamps” based in Topeka, says Danielle Martin.

“They see ‘Bootcamp’ and don’t want to do it,” said Martin, a WIBW TV reporter who also volunteers as director of the Omni Circle Group’s MOVE program.

But volunteers involved in MOVE, which stands for “mobility opportunities in different environments,” are working to make these bootcamps less daunting by encouraging participants to work at their own pace, Martin said on Saturday.

She attended a family health and wellness fun day held in Central Park in Topeka by the Omni Circle Group, a nonprofit that aims to unite and empower minority communities by focusing on personal and professional development.

“Our goal is to change lives by helping people become better versions of themselves,” said Martin.

The Saturday event started at 8am and featured free fitness classes for the first two hours, followed by two hours of free Family Day activities, including a bouncy castle, food truck, and the opportunity to join one of eight health and fitness providers Fitness resources.

Michael Odupitan, a former Washburn University football and basketball player and president of the Omni Circle Group, said he was glad to see adults and children alike learn about resources they can use for healthier lives.

“Today was good,” he said. “To see the kids come out, the parents come out, see the salespeople come, it was really good to see this collaboration.”
