At some point, many who follow the fitness and exercise regimen will peak and stop making progress. After weeks and months of success it seems to have stopped even though we haven’t changed anything. Nothing to change, however, can be the exact cause of the plateau. Buffalo Fitness Trainer Christopher Lee, I’m going to tell you how to get off the plateau and continue progressing.
How to overcome the fitness plateau
As your body gets used to the calories you burn and the activity you do, your metabolism goes down and we need to get it going again. Below are a few ways to give your body that extra kick it needs by pushing across the plateau:
Cut back on more calories
Nobody should eat less than 1,200 a day. So if you still have room to trim, do this. Don’t go below these 1,200 calories, however. Eating less than 1,200 calories a day increases the risk of overeating, as this amount of calories is insufficient to reduce hunger.
Increase your exercise fever
The average person should exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Anyone trying to cross a plateau has to spend more time than usual exercising. If prolonged training is not possible, Lee recommends increasing activity and calorie consumption during normal training hours.
Do more activities outside of the gym
When you step out of the gym door, you just don’t stop burning calories. Do additional activities at other times of the day. For example, use stairs instead of elevators or increase gardening work. The extra calories that you burn off doing something else are nicely added and throw you off the plateau.
Reconsider your habits
Lee explains that it can be very easy to relax the rules without really realizing it. He recommends that everyone keep a journal of food and activities. Then you can look back and see if you have slipped or loosened these rules. For example, have you been able to exercise less recently? Have you been eating more calories lately? Research has shown that loosening the rules can lead to plateaus.
Do not stop
The worst thing you can do is turn the plateau into a sinkhole. Instead, be honest with yourself and analyze your current habits and what you can do to change your calorie intake and activity level.
