Paula Begoun, an internationally renowned skin care and beauty expert, has broken the most common skin care myths we’ve heard.

When it comes to skin care and beauty, we all have our beliefs and ideas about what works. Some were passed down by elders, others we received through the Internet. But we know better than blindly following what has been said! Here are some of the most common myths, according to an expert, that never seem to go away!

Myth: Natural ingredients are better for your skin.

Research makes it clear that while there are many brilliant natural ingredients for the skin, there are also many natural ingredients that both irritate and damage the skin, and these keep appearing in skin care products. On the flip side, there are many lab-made ingredients that are brilliant for the skin and work far better for the skin than their natural counterparts.

Myth: The skin is best repaired at night.

Research shows that exactly the opposite is the case: the skin heals better during the day than at night because you move more during the day, increase blood flow and increase oxygen uptake, which in turn stimulates healing much more than just lying still in bed.

Myth: A cool, tingly feeling means a product is working.

One cooling or tingly feeling is when your skin is telling you it’s sensitized and irritated, which doesn’t help! In addition to the irritation you may see or feel on the surface, there is also damage below the surface that destroys support structures that you cannot see or feel. The most common ingredients that cause a cool or tingly feeling on the skin are denatured or SD alcohol, menthol, menthyl lactate, peppermint oil, camphor, eucalyptus and essential oils.

Myth: dry skin? Drink more water!

While drinking eight glasses of water a day is a good idea for your body, it won’t change your dry skin. If that were all, very few of us would have dry skin. The causes and solutions of dry skin are far more complex than just drinking water – good skin care helps here.

Myth: Your skin adapts to the products you use so that they eventually stop working

The skin no longer adapts to skin care products than your body adapts to a healthy diet. As long as you use what’s beneficial to the skin (and avoid things that damage the skin, such as unprotected sun exposure), they’ll keep working every day of your life.

Myth: Your throat and chest need special ingredients.

The neck and chest do not require any products or ingredients other than the face, and there is no research to suggest otherwise. Products marked as specifically formulated for the neck or chest area are high on the list when it comes to wasting money on unnecessary products that make claims that are not true. The same ingredients that you use on your face also work on your neck and chest.

Myth: Essential oils are great for treating many skin problems.

Essential oils are not good for your skin as most of them contain volatile, fragrant compounds that also cause significant inflammation. If you have dry skin, it is better to look for non-fragrant vegetable oils like jojoba, sunflower, argan, acacia, most berry oils, etc., which have only skin benefits and no skin problems.
