Diabetes pioneer Professor Roman Hovorka will speak at a conference for those affected at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The researcher launched the world’s first licensed, downloadable artificial pancreas app for people with type 1 diabetes.

It works together with an insulin pump and a glucose monitor to automatically administer insulin to the patient using a complex algorithm.

People with type 1 diabetes used to have to rely on routine finger blood tests and insulin injections or infusions to stay alive.

He is just one of the senior diabetes healthcare professionals, researchers, and scientists who will share their knowledge and expertise. The conference is also an opportunity to hear the experiences of patients with diabetes.

The hospital’s patient committee coordinated the conference, which will be held at the Harlow Study Center, socially distant and via online conference software.

Chair Ann Nutt said, “We are excited to host our first diabetes care conference and we are grateful to our amazing guest speakers who devote their time to sharing their knowledge and expertise.

“The conference will allow staff and the wider community to gain a deep understanding of diabetes and the latest modern technology to treat the disease.

“We encourage the local community living with diabetes or with a special interest in diabetes to attend a session from world leader Professor Hovorka, who invented the groundbreaking artificial pancreas, and a session on the automated closed insulin delivery system hosted by a pioneer , Lane Desborough. “

The 45-minute sessions will take place on Wednesday, July 7, from 11.55 a.m. to 12.40 p.m. and 2.45 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. To register, visit www.pah.nhs.uk for more information.
