Fitness classes are prescribed for depressed or diabetic women seeking help from their general practitioner.

This Girl Can course, designed by Sport England and based on the successful campaign of the same name, will be rolled out across the country early next year.

They are based on disciplines such as dancing, boxing, and yoga and are designed as non judgmental sessions where participants are encouraged to “do your worst”.

Physicians are encouraged to send patients to courses as a form of “social prescription” attempting to address a person’s non-medical needs – some of which may contribute to conditions such as diabetes, depression, or obesity – in conjunction with a link worker.

An estimated one-fifth of patients turn to their GP to find out about that
