I have been testing roller balls with essential oils for menstrual cramps for a while. They seem to be handy and compact tools that can be kept near or in my pocket in case cramps unexpectedly arise. I wouldn’t mind adding another remedy to my repertoire, either.
When it comes to home anti-seizure solutions, things like exposure to heat and physical activity are still the most recommended ones. However, there is evidence that essential oils could be useful tools. A very small study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that patients with primary dysmenorrhea (or menstrual cramps) who massaged a blend of essential oils of lavender, clary sage, and marjoram diluted in a non-perfumed cream on the lower abdomen from the end of one menstruation until the beginning of their next menstruation found relief experienced. Another study found that inhaling lavender could potentially help relieve some symptoms of menstrual cramps.
Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s a panacea for terrible cramps. Everyone reacts differently to home remedies. If you are in severe pain, you should always contact a doctor for advice. It is also a good idea to consult a doctor before adding essential oils to your routine, as some essential oils are not considered safe for people with certain health conditions or people of certain ages.
Essential oils can also be particularly irritating to the skin. So when you try them out, be sure that they are diluted. It is usually recommended to test them on a small patch of skin first to make sure there is no irritation.
When you’re ready to try essential oils, rollerballs make the process a little easier as they’re premixed and often already diluted in a carrier oil (although you should always check the ingredients list!). Pre-look at four that I want to add to my cart.
