Steel Athletics won the team event of the First Annual Dry-Tri Series, which ended on Saturday at the Hotel Nikko Guam.

The event included a road run plus time on the ergometer and the rowing machine. Organized by Unified Gear, it is a gym-style triathlon where only the athletes had to leave the running track.

It was the last of a monthly series of three events in which the winners were determined by accumulated points. More than 70 athletes competed in the areas of team, performance and fitness.

“Two reasons why we came up with this type of event. It’s socially distant and easily accessible for all fitness levels, ”said Topher Barretto, President of Unified Gear.

“We wanted to promote fitness in a playful way, in everything that happens. With the current global health crisis, it is more important than ever to lead a better life,” said Barretto.

Athletics made of steel

Steel Athletics took first place in the team classification. They shredded the last event on the way to the top spot.

Team members Larry Steel, JJ Ambrose, and Mike Bautista stormed through a 2-mile run, 8-kilometer bike ride, and 3-kilometer row.

The event almost didn’t start as the organizers carefully monitored the weather until Friday after 8 p.m. and then gave attendees the go-ahead via social media. The day started in the dirt, but later the weather cleared up, almost as good as the series’ first two perfect weather events.

“We are very happy with how things have gone. We certainly thought the Dry-Tri would be postponed due to the weather, but luckily the show went on, “said Ambrose, who owns Steel Athletics.

“I’m really proud of all of the people who are out of their comfort zone, the members of Steel Athletics, as well as other gyms in the community. These fitness-related events are pushing the health needle in the right direction, ”he said. “At Steel, we are always happy to support health and fitness for the benefit of the island. The victory was just the icing on the cake. “

Other winners

Unified Fit conquered the performance class when Branden Young and Taylor Crisostomo won the men’s and women’s sections, respectively.

In the fitness section – more intended for cross-fit recreational athletes – the winners came from various clubs.

CrossFit Lattestone’s Ariel Delos Reyes won the men’s division while Steel Athletics’ Sydney Escoe won the women’s division.
