The Ministry of Health estimates that national statistics for diabetes have increased over the past 10 years.

Minister Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete says that in 2002 around 15 percent of the adult population had the non-communicable disease. In 2011 that figure rose to 16 percent, and authorities expect it to increase gradually this year.

The next survey is expected at the end of the year.

“It’s 2 to 3 to 4 percent every 10 years, we could probably estimate that we could sit at 18 to 19 percent, but like I said, we should be able to do the survey and do the data that does it would be able to show that. “

The minister says there is an increasing number of people reporting to hospitals with late stages of diabetes that could have been cured if presented early.

The Minister of Health says they have the resources and the manpower to solve the problem, but eating healthy and exercising is crucial.
