Tim Smith, FirstHealth Fitness Exercise is Medicine Clinic Program Manager, was recently awarded the Southeast Rising Star Award 2021 by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA).

Smith was recognized for his work on the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) program, which created a streamlined referral process for providers and successfully expanded the program to all FirstHealth Fitness locations.

“It is an honor to receive this award and to be recognized for promoting the program’s commitment to making fitness as accessible as possible,” said Smith. “Physical activity is a powerful tool in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. We hope to be able to offer a program that guides and teaches participants how to use exercises in a way that works well for them. “

The MFA Regional Rising Star Award program recognizes outstanding individual achievements and significant leadership positions within the medical fitness community. The nominees are judged according to strict criteria, including:

Continuously exceeding performance expectations;

Implementation of procedural recommendations and participation in the delivery process;

Active pursuit of personal, professional, and intellectual growth opportunities;

Exemplary interest in customers in the medical fitness sector and striving for growth in the medical fitness sector.

Smith began his career at FirstHealth in the 1990s in cardiac rehabilitation. Prior to his current position, he was clinical director and exercise specialist. Smith joined the EIM team in 2019 as a clinical program manager and continues to work with clinics, patients and clinical staff.

Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s degree in naturopathy. He is a certified exercise specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine and recently completed his drug abuse fitness specialist certification. John Caliri, director of FirstHealth Fitness, said Smith is constantly looking to improve both the EIM program and his own expertise.

“Tim has been an important part of the success of our Exercise Is Medicine program and keeps it in mind for healthcare providers,” said Caliri. “We are proud to have him on the team and celebrate his continued success.”
