FORT CAMPBELL, Kentucky – To kick off Memorial Day weekend, members of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) share the day with members of the fitness community Demi Bagby, Robert Killian Austen Alexander, Michael Eckert and Erik Bartell in a friendly against five fitness competitions.
This event brought together active duty members, veterans and military supporters to achieve a common goal of remembering the men and women who fought for our nation but never made it home.
“As human beings, we die twice when your life is stolen and when your name is no longer in the stories of others. This weekend, be sure to say the names of your fallen brother or sister out loud with others so that we always remember their sacrifice and keep them alive, ”said Ben Bunn, a retired Army Special member Forces.
For the training competition, each member of the five-person team did the following:
Run 1 mile
50 pull-ups
Carry 100m pawns
50 deadlifts – 135
Wind sprints
100m Medball Throw Relay and run the ball back Sled Relay
50 pull-ups with hand release
Run 1 mile (finish as a team)
All members of the team had to complete each event before the team could move on to the next.
Military members of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team “Rakkasan”, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team “Strike”, the 1st Brigade Combat Team “Bastone” and the Echelon team participated in the event back and forth between each team. While everyone on the team knew that today was not about winning, the goal was to overcome some of the pain and fatigue their bodies went through to remind us that Memorial Day, an American holiday, ended last Monday Committed in May was in honor of the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military spent more than a day on the boat barbecuing. It’s about never forgetting the military who sacrificed everything for our freedom.
“This challenge is in honor of the brave men and women who gave everything so we can be here today. We are proud to stand next to these Screaming Eagles to show our support for members whose mission it is to heed the nation’s call to protect our freedom, ”said Erik Bartell, 3BCT Veterans Officer.
The army has the motto: “If it doesn’t rain, don’t train” and without a doubt, as the announcer said, three … two … one … go! The rain began to fall. For most people, they would have stopped the competition, but for all of the teams that came out today, it seemed to make them work even harder and endure even more pain and discomfort to show their respect for the fallen military personnel of that nation.
“With the support of the 101st Air Assault, we’re so proud to show our support by taking on a five-on-five fitness challenge to honor the brave souls who make this world left early so we can live in this wonderful and free country, ”said Robert Killian. “We know this day is about honoring the sacrifices you have made in the service, and being able to share a portion of this weekend with members of the 101st Airborne Division is a real honor.”
