Would you like some inspiration to get on the training train in 2022? Well, maybe the forecast trends are pointing in the right direction.
Recently PureGym published the analysis of its worldwide Google search data, revealing the fitness trends that will dominate in 2022.
The study analyzed data for over 100 fitness trends to see the increase and decrease in interest between now and last year. Unsurprisingly, home exercise is declining, down 64 percent after a huge surge at the height of the pandemic, as people yearn to get back to the gym, class, and the outdoors.
Meanwhile, the popularity of glute workouts has risen 22 percent and is showing no signs of slowing as interest grows year over year while interest in poor has declined 18 percent.
What exactly can we attribute to these changes? According to Stephen Rowe, Chief Marketing Officer at PureGym, this is due to the upheaval we have seen in the world over the past two years.
“The fitness world has changed a lot in the last two years and it was really interesting to see what trends have emerged from that time and what trends are on the rise,” he explained. “While we loved welcoming people back to the gym, we know the key to a healthy life is finding an activity that you enjoy – and fitness trends are a big part of that.”
The data enabled PureGym to understand the top fitness trends of 2022, and below are the top 5.
Weighted hula hoops
The 234 percent increase in interest in weighted hula hoops is likely thanks to TikTok, as the app has around 200 million views of hula hoop workouts. Not only is hula hoop a TikTok trend, it also has a number of benefits for the body. It naturally burns calories, helps reduce fat around your waist and hips, while increasing core muscle mass and aerobic health. Studies also show that it lowers bad cholesterol and can release dopamine as it is classified as a fun exercise.
ZUU
Zuu saw a 124 percent surge in interest and burning about 300 calories in 30 minutes is likely the cause. The adapted style of HITT training by Australian fitness guru Nathan Helberg is a combined strength and energy lesson that creates a full-body workout. Based on the movements of animals, the workouts use original movements such as pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, squats and lunges in a challenging way.
Stroller fitness
New moms worry about incorporating exercise into their new life, so it makes sense that interest in stroller fitness has increased 91 percent. Power walking while pushing a stroller is a workout good enough to burn calories and increase cardio levels. Some parents go alone, while others organize group classes in which they run or jog with their stroller and combine cardio and strength training, as the stroller is their piece of equipment. An effective training in the company of your baby.
Reverse
Running backwards has been increased by 50 percent and this exercise is just as good for the mind as it is for the body. The activity requires you to walk backwards, which taps into various sensory signals, as you no longer rely on sight to guide your direction and this is an extremely uncomfortable experience at first. But every time you get better, it burns more calories than traditional running, improves posture, reduces stress on your knees, and also stimulates your brain.
Trapeze courses
This fitness activity often creeps into annual fitness trends, it was introduced in 2009, 2014, 2019, and this year the exercise saw a 39 percent increase. Trapeze focuses on multiple muscle groups at the same time and allows for a full body workout that burns calories and acts as strength training. The physical aspect of Trapeze is challenging in itself, but the classes will also train your brain as timing is critical.
