CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) – On the steps of North View Elementary School, more than $ 2,000 was awarded Thursday night to residents completing a 90-mile-in-90-day challenge as part of North View’s Healthy Harrison program .

North View Healthy Harrison Community Leader Jennifer Angiulli presented $ 500 cash prizes to a man and woman who lost the most weight since June 1 while walking at least 90 miles. Other participants in different age categories also received prizes.

“Lots of people in North View attended,” Angiulli said. “Taken together, I believe we ran over 8,000 miles and lost 179 pounds. We’re really happy with the result and I think it was nice for the community to connect and be out there again. Small steps lead to big changes. “

Toma Wallace was the female winner of $ 500. She ran 222 miles and lost 38 pounds in the past three months.

She went for walks almost every day with husband Dennis, who lost 10 pounds in the summer, and 10-year-old daughter Montana.

“If she saw us walk out the door, she would say, ‘Wait for me,'” said Toma.

The couple also often pushed 11-month-old grandson Robert in a stroller.

Toma also took part in the county’s Biggest Loser Challenge, and although the 90-day challenge is over, she plans to keep walking to keep getting healthier.

Jim Corley was the $ 500 male winner.

Colleen Driscoll, who taught at North View Elementary last year, walked 320 miles during the Challenge and won $ 100.

“I like to do sports,” she says. “My husband and I went to the North Rail Trail, or we usually just walked home. Walked every morning or evening. It was fun. I’m glad I did. “

As part of the Summer Fitness Challenge, tai chi was free on Mondays in the St.

On Thursday evening, Healthy Harrison paid tribute to MVB Bank’s contribution to the North View Elementary’s new Lu Interactive Playground.

Angilulli described the playground as multifunctional.

“It’s kind of a game console for a school or a classroom, like a Wii. It gets kids moving. It’s educational. It does things for the mind like yoga. And it’s for adults too, ”she said. “This is something that the school has wanted for a long time. The healthy Harrison made her dreams come true and MVB Bank made the generous donation that made everything possible. “

The Lu Interactive Playground is unique in the Harrison County’s school system.

North View Primary School Principal Danielle Veltri said that thanks to the playground, students of all grades have already learned their colors and numbers, how to solve math problems or how to meditate.

“That’s incredible,” she said. “It combines movement and learning in one activity. We can also organize parents’ evenings or parents come with their children. It’s a great community tool. “
