COLORADO SPRING – A New Year brings new goals, and one of the most common resolutions is to exercise. Research from YouGov shows that 50% of New Year’s resolutions are fitness related. However, it is sometimes difficult to hold on to that goal.
I’ve spoken to a few local gyms here in Colorado Springs who have provided insight into how those who have committed to getting in shape this season can do just that.
Everyone agreed on one thing: consistency. Both gym owners tell me that they saw people give up too soon after trying to set unrealistic goals for themselves. The best thing you can do is start with smaller goals and build from there.
“A good fitness goal is to be realistic. Don’t set a one- or two-month goal for yourself. Set yourself a 12 month goal or even a 24 month goal and that way it’s achievable. It’s something you won’t get depressed about if you don’t reach your goal after 30 days, “said Duane Johnston, Accolade Fitness Owner.
“Every day is a victory in itself if you are consistent with your practice. But don’t try to start too crazy or too intense like many people do, “said Keith Jackson, owner of Kineo Fit.
Some might be wary of hitting a gym with a recent surge in Omicron cases in El Paso County. The gym owners now say we have been in this pandemic for two years, they have mastered the art of keeping their gyms safe.
“At the moment, based on the level before Covid, our membership number is now around 20 to 25 percent. Our use of paper towels and disinfectants has increased 300 percent, so people are very aware, “said Johnston.
“We encourage people, of course, to not go to the gym if they are uncomfortable. There’s a lot of cleaning going on all the time and we haven’t had an outbreak in the last two years so we’re happy with that, ”said Jackson.
Both gyms offer very different types of training. But while it’s helpful, you don’t need a gym to meet your fitness goals. What works for one person may not work for another

The best thing you can do is figure out what works for you, and that can be exercising at home or taking a walk. There is a wide variety of youtube and online training programs that make training easier. Finally, having a responsible partner can help you focus on your goals.
