Planet Fitness, the national chain of 24-hour fitness centers, will open a new location in downtown Walnut Creek.

The new gym, which was approved by the city’s planning committee on Thursday, will join a host of other Planet Fitness locations in the Bay Area, including one in neighboring Concord.

It will replace the Cost Plus World Market, which was closed during the pandemic, and leave the building’s ground floor at 1697 Mt Diablo Blvd. vacant.

Planet Fitness will occupy the approximately 19,000 square meter area directly under the inner courtyard of Fleming’s, a restaurant next door.

A representative from Planet Fitness told the planning committee that after the holiday season, when a lot of people tend to join as members at the beginning of a new year, the gym will attract people downtown.

The gym chain offers a basic membership of $ 10 per month and a “black card” membership of approximately $ 23 per month, which allows members to exercise at any Planet Fitness location of their choice. Basic membership restricts gym attendees to the location where they signed up.

City planning staff said in a report to commissioners that the gym will “strengthen downtown identity and enhance the pedestrian-only retail space” by attracting visitors around the clock.
