WHEELING _ Plans to add a fitness center to the Highlands Sports Complex are on hold as current construction costs in the market continue to rise.

According to County Administrator Randy Russell, the Ohio County Development Authority had hoped to build the fitness center for less than $ 3.2 million.

“The bids for the fitness center were well above budget.” he said. “We decided to put it on hold for a while until market conditions change.”

Russell said the price of building materials increased 30% for just putting one project together, while deliveries of structural steel can take nearly a year.

The planned two-story fitness center should have standards such as fitness equipment, dumbbells and ergometers.

There are plans for a yoga studio that would include: “Hot yoga” Classes. Saunas would be available, as well as a place for “ice cold baths.” Outside terraces would be lined with lawn and serve as a place for social events.

With the construction of the sports complex, a structure was built for the future fitness center.

According to Russell, it will be unfinished for now.

“We will clean up the area and make it visually appealing.” he said. “We’ll just wait and see. We will speak to the board and the architect (Victor Greco) to see if something else can be done. “
