At the Highlands Ranch, a senior fitness class aimed at engaging the population over 55 has become a much more valuable resource for the community.
As a group of senior fitness attendees celebrated classmate Yvette Gunther’s 99th birthday party, many commented on how the program led to lifelong friendships, support and help for one another.
The midweek aerobics class taught by instructor Allyson Holgard at Northridge Recreation Center brings the seniors to energetic music and a lively atmosphere.
The connections don’t end with the last song in class, however. Longtime student Linda Wilson said the exercises have become a small part of the program.
“It’s not just about fitness,” she says. “It’s about making important connections for all of us. For me, it’s more about being social and making friends. The courses are always full for a reason. This is definitely not your typical senior fitness class. Love the class. I love the program. “
Making the program a great success is the direction Holgard has set, noted many students.
During Gunther’s post-class birthday party, Holgard made the rounds, hugging, smiling, and showing that she had become part of the group.
“In Senior Fitness we all come together with different physical challenges and needs,” said Holgard. “We want everyone to feel at home”
Gunther said she hates being alone after feeling lonely in a boarding school. The longtime Highlands Ranch resident said senior fitness connected her with new friends, kept her in shape, and made her appreciate the community she lives in.
“Every senior should take a course,” said Gunther. “You find inspiration to talk to people, make friends and be together. After I lost my husband, this fitness group helped me not to be alone. “
Kathy Martz said she entered class a few years ago and loved every minute under Holgard’s leadership.
“Allyson is absolutely phenomenal,” she said. “It focuses on moving seniors and taking us far beyond the fitness aspect. We are connected and friends. “
