Boxing has a special connection with the South End communities, largely because it’s so much more than just a sport. The Seattle boxing scene caters to many different – and intersecting – groups of people: those primarily interested in fitness, children seeking an extracurricular activity, teens escaping the life of the street, women, the LGBTQ + community , Families and the elderly who want to give something back. While boxing gyms have been closed to personal training for most of last year, these popular cornerstones of the South End communities have recently returned to full capacity. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to put on a pair of boxing gloves and learn how to throw a proper jab, now is a good time to give it a try.

“To me, boxing gyms were a secular version of churches: a place where people take refuge … and are not judged for something that the world would normally be judged for. You just come here and work, ”said trainer Tricia Arcaro Turton, founder of Arcaro Boxing in the Central District.
