17 Physique Oils to Assist Moisturize Pores and skin

There are two types of people in this world: those who happily apply themselves to a thick, creamy lotion after jumping out of the shower, and those who cannot think of a more agonizing task. (So. much. Rubbing.) Fortunately, there are body oils for the latter group – they’re super light and trap moisture with a lot less effort. With that in mind, it’s important to note that lotions and oils are not necessarily made the same – while both moisturize the body, they do it in slightly different ways.

What are body oils exactly?

“Body oils are made up of exactly these – oils – while body lotions are usually an emulsion (mixture) of oils and water combined,” says Courtney Rubin, MD, MBE, FAAD, Harvard dermatologist and co-founder of Fig.1 Skincare. “Since body oils contain no water, the products themselves do not provide any moisture. Instead, body oils seal and bind moisture, which is why the perfect time to apply is right after you shower. ”

So if your skin is dehydrated (in other words, it’s lacking in water) and you don’t apply body oil after you shower, Dr. Ruby that a lotion may still be needed to keep dryness at bay. Even then, for those who just can’t stand a full rub down after a shower, applying oil is better than nothing.

What to consider when looking for a body oil

Know your ingredients

Most body oils contain a special blend of moisturizing oils – no two are alike – so it is important to know which are the best. Dr. Ruby favors seed oils that “mimic the properties of natural sebum and soften, nourish and moisturize the skin”. These include: Grapeseed oil, evening primrose oil, meadowfoam oil and sunflower oil.

Meanwhile, BEAUTYBEEZ’s dual-licensed esthetician and head esthetician, Jessica Houston, recommends four other ingredients to look out for. Argan oil, she says, helps with dull, dry skin and is high in antioxidants that help fight environmental damage. sesame oil has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and is beneficial for acne prone skin and acne scars. Coconut oil is moisturizing for dry skin and eczema and promotes wound healing by reducing inflammation. Jojoba oil is a natural humectant that draws moisture from the air to strengthen the skin barrier. It’s also high in vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Look at the texture

“You want to be more inclined to an oil that is light and easily absorbed by the skin,” says Houston. “Thick oils don’t penetrate easily and are likely to clog pores.”

Avoid irritants and fragrances

Dr. Rubin warns against formulas with lots of herbal ingredients, essential oils, and fragrances – especially for people with sensitive skin – as they can cause contact dermatitis. Houston agrees, adding that tea tree oil should be specifically avoided. “Tea Tree can be very dehydrating and most skin types become sensitive if used too often,” she explains. If you want an oil that smells great, Houston recommends trying something with a tiny amount of natural lavender, eucalyptus, or vanilla, all of which are known for their soothing and calming properties and can enhance the application experience.
