On the surface of things, technology has helped fill in many of the gaps. In more ways than one, technology has been able to democratize and access diverse life experiences that may have been difficult in the past. Even the fitness industry has seen benefits over time. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many have resorted to online fitness training, which alone has helped make fitness more accessible to the vast majority of people.

However, there is a dark side that is rarely talked about. Science and technology have certainly helped bring people together who are passionate about fitness, staying healthy and living a healthy lifestyle. However, in the last 15-20 years there has been no significant development in the Indian fitness industry.

So much technology but no science

Just like Instagram, Tik-Tok, Zoom or whatever is the new trending social media platform this month. Every time a new fitness trend hits India, people start following it blindly. However, nobody considers whether this new regime will work for them and their body type. That could do more harm than good later.

Everyone seems to have their own theory and trend in which to invest their beliefs. Some are talking about ketogenic diets, intermittent fasting, Cross Fit, HIIT. But there is no rule of thumb to get fit and above all healthy.

The scientific approach to fitness

In India we lack the basics, the basics to help people get fit. Most of the time, people confuse the simple difference between fat loss and weight loss. Basic principles such as regimes for men and women are different because we are built differently and require different methods to achieve largely the same goals. Since India is very diverse, it also needs a diverse approach to getting healthy and fit.

Fitness requires a personalized scientific approach with proper guidance on nutrition tailored to the needs of the individual. The individual’s background and lifestyle need to be considered, as well as their health status and history.

Most online classes are conducted by fitness models/athletes, which I prefer to classify as such. They may be fit themselves, but they lack the experience that is important to be a trainer or fitness professional. Many of them have completed rudimentary training themselves, set up their own practices and are now coaching others. They typically impart the knowledge that has worked for them without necessarily considering the athlete’s personal history. Since they don’t have any real experience, I feel like they lack the credibility that it takes to be a coach. It takes years to understand and provide the right guidance to help people get fit.

People tend to take fitness trainers at face value. They feel that if they go to someone with an athletic body, they can also help them get in shape. However, that is far from the truth.

The effects of improper fitness methods

Most uninitiated trainers tend to use crossfit, HIIT, boxing, weightlifting, running and others supplemented with fad diets like keto, intermittent fasting, paleo to help their athletes or clients transform.

There is nothing wrong with any of the routines. But there is a lack of knowledge and understanding that not everything works for everyone. A routine that worked for one may not necessarily work for another. In return, some people can even experience serious side effects.

Without the right approach and guidance, improperly executed fitness programs can even lead to serious injuries. It can be just physical at first, but it can even cause people to become mentally impaired. This could lead to them not only losing confidence in the regime, but even in themselves. Which leads them to abandon their fitness goals for fear of further injury. Mental toughness is just as important to fitness and a healthy lifestyle as physical health and strength.

The one-on-one approach

Fitness requires a healthy approach, starting with small steps. Metabolism and genetics play a huge role in fitness and strength. Everyone takes their own amount of time to reach their fitness goals.

Personal contact between coach and athlete is crucial. Furthermore, the additional knowledge gained from the relationship helps the trainers to further develop the program. Changing routines from time to time gives athletes a psychological boost with a refreshing workout. It also avoids burnouts and athletes hitting a wall as they progress.

Online group sessions are affordable and can be effective and beneficial for many. People with minor health issues and injuries can easily achieve their goals if done right. However, individuals suffering from mild to severe health conditions need dedicated personal trainers. It will help them achieve sustainable results at their own pace through a scientific approach.

In any case, commitment from both sides is required to achieve sustainable fitness goals, which must be carried out correctly and safely.
