SUN PRAIRIE, Wisconsin – Abby Barr has spent the past three years figuring out a way to give back.

“I knew after the explosion that I was meant for something more without realizing that it was right in front of me,” explained Barr.

Just blocks from the 2018 explosion site in downtown Sun Prairie, Barr embarks on a new adventure. This month she took over the Sun Prairie location from Burn Boot Camp.

“I don’t know why, I was just so drawn to come here and add some structure to my life,” said Barr.

Four Christmas days after Barr lost her husband Cory and father to their twin girls, things move forward

“I do it for my mental health, physical health is just an added bonus,” added Barr. “It’s a community that gathers around you, encouraging and inspiring you, and helping you do things that you thought you couldn’t do.”

Barr joined the gym back in 2018, just months before the explosion, and has been a member ever since.

“I’ve had rheumatoid arthritis since I was seven years old,” said Barr. “Since July 2018 I have also been dealing with a lot of psychological problems. This place was my outlet and a big part of my healing process during my grief. “

When she’s not directing the operation, you can find Abby training with the other members on the floor and remembering her old ones right next door.

“For me, I drove past it every day to come here. I could have taken a different path, but like everything else I’ve experienced in my grief journey, I dealt with it right away, “said Barr. “To be in a building and another store in downtown Sun Prairie, in an area that means so much to me, is a blessing.”

Barr says she looks forward to continuing to raise her family at home and now her growing fitness family at the gym.

“The community has rallied so much behind me during this time and in recent years that I now have the opportunity to do this for them,” concluded Barr.

Abby Barr bought the Sun Prairie location of Burn Boot Camp from Howard and Tina Schumaker. They still own the rest of the Burn locations in the greater Madison area.
