Google is everywhere at this point. Would you like to upload images or files to the cloud? You can use Google Drive or Google Photos. Want to listen to podcasts but don’t know which app to use? Give Google Podcasts a try. Or are you looking for a new way to track your daily activities and record every workout? Now you can do this with the help of Google Fit.

Google Fit’s approach is a bit simpler than other fitness apps, so it’s easy to use. However, there are other apps out there that might be better than Google Fit, including Apple’s own fitness app, which has everything you need to help you meet your fitness goals within the Apple ecosystem that we all know and love.

So which one is better for you? Apple’s fitness app? Or good old Google Fit?

Let’s break them down.

What is Google Fit?

While it’s not that popular, Google Fit has been around for over six years, but it was only recently that Google finally made this app available to iPhone users as well. Google Fit is a fitness and health tracking app that allows you to track your daily activities just like any other fitness app.

What’s good about Google Fit?

What makes Google Fit different is that it doesn’t show your progress the way most apps do. You can still keep track of calories burned, miles, and active minutes during the day, as well as your sleep and heart rate. However, Google Fit focuses on two main goals: steps and what Google calls heart points.

What are heart points? Heart points are points that you earn for activities with a higher intensity. The more intense an activity or workout, the more Heart Points you will earn. Basically, Google’s way of playing your tracking is so that you can push yourself to do more activity.

Instead of a stand goal, a move goal, and an exercise goal, Google makes this easy so all you have to focus on is your steps and your heart points.

Google Fit also has a diary that you can use to record your daily workouts. You can add how much time you spent on a workout. Google Fit saves this information and tells you how many calories you burned, what your heart rate was, and even what route you took while cycling. You can also keep track of your weight and sleep in your diary. It’s a great way to look back and see how far you’ve come over time.

Google Fit and Apple Health

Another great thing about Google Fit is that you can link it to Apple Health. The first time you use it, you’ll have the option to share your Apple Health data with Google Fit. This makes it easy for Google Fit to keep track of all of your Apple Health app’s functions, including sleep and heart rate. That being said, Google Fit doesn’t have nearly the same number of health categories as Apple Health. Google Fit doesn’t track things like mindfulness and diet, which are two important factors in a person’s health.

The downside of using Google Fit

As mentioned earlier, Google Fit is a minimal and straightforward app. While this may be good for some people, others may be missing some features that are unique to the fitness app. First, the awards. Although Google Fit tracks your goals and lets you know when you will destroy them, the fitness app will give you a medal for every milestone you reach. It is an enjoyable sensation to see a new badge on your rewards list that you don’t get from Google Fit.

Another important thing that is missing from Google Fit is a social function. In the fitness app, you can share and invite friends or family to train and do activities together. There’s even an award for completing a seven-day competition. When you start exercising, one of the best ways to hold someone accountable is to hold yourself accountable and consistently achieve your goals. That’s just something Google Fit won’t do for you. If you love the social aspect of the fitness app, Google Fit isn’t for you (pun intended).

There is also Apple Fitness +

While it’s not free, the fitness app also offers Apple Fitness +, a subscription-based fitness service that Apple launched in 2020. It offers a range of workouts to start your fitness journey with. Each workout is harder and more fun than the other. Google Fit, on the other hand, doesn’t really help you exercise. It’s only there for the ride.

Should you be using Google Fit?

If you’re an Apple user and don’t have any changes planned anytime soon, you should probably skip Google Fit. While it’s a simple fitness tracking app, you won’t get more out of the app than you can with Apple’s fitness app.

Not to say that Google Fit is definitely bad. However, the fitness app has other features to help you stay motivated and track your fitness goals.

On the flip side, Google Fit is a great option if you are constantly switching between devices or if you no longer see yourself as an iPhone user in the future. You can start tracking your progress on your iPhone, knowing that you can push your progress over to other devices, much like you can with any other Google app.

The best part is that you can use both Google Fit and the fitness app at the same time if you just want to try it out. Both apps can work at the same time, and you can get the most out of both and try out which one you like best.
