Postal codes help protect against fraud

Dear write to know: Whenever I buy gasoline with my credit card at my local gas station, I am asked to enter my zip code. Why do i have to do this Any information would be helpful.

FS, Hyannis

Dear FS: We have answered this question in the past. When a pump asks you to enter your zip code, it is for security reasons. Thieves sometimes test cards to see if they still live in places where they don’t need to conduct in-person transactions, such as in the office. B. at the pump. We didn’t notice that all gas pumps use this prompt, but for those who do, it’s some form of fraud protection.
