SINGAPORE – Gyms and studios were full of fitness enthusiasts again on Monday (June 21st) as these companies welcomed customers for the first time since stricter Covid-19 measures on June 8th.

On the TFX Millenia Walk, nearly 300 members had checked into its 41,700 square foot store by 1:00 p.m., with about 30 people exercising in the outlet when the Straits Times visited at 1:00 p.m.

Some devices were cordoned off to keep a safe distance, but that didn’t deter auditor Jonathan Ting, who visited the Millenia Walk branch four to five times a week before the gyms closed.

He’d tried jogging and bodyweight workouts to keep up his fitness, but found it difficult to stay motivated to follow a routine from home.

Mr. Ting, 26, said, “Of course you can exercise at home, but the environment is different so it kind of affects your exercise mood. I need the right environment and the right place to train. “

Andrew Lan, 44, Business Manager for the True Group division, also noted that the personal trainers were fully booked. He said, “The biggest thing we’ve missed is the energy. When you’re in here, you feel good because you’re next to like-minded people who come to train and train.”

In preparation for the reopening, True Group conducted several rounds of deep cleaning of their stores and training of staff to ensure everyone was familiar with the necessary safe management measures.

They also used the disinfectant coating SDST on the fitness equipment and demarcated areas for class to ensure that they were done in groups of two with three meters between these areas for groups of two.

Lan added that True Group has conducted the Fast and Easy Tests (FET) training for employees and is hoping to roll out FET for its branches once it becomes mandatory by mid-July.

Financial advisor Ivan Ku, 25, was happy to be going back to the gym but also made his own precautions by putting on a mask while exercising.

He said, “People still need to follow Standard Operating Instructions or things may get worse. It’s really important that I wear my mask and keep my distance from others.”

In addition to the reopening of the gyms, sports competitions were resumed this week.

The CarTimes Singapore Junior Development Tour Championship will take place at the Laguna National from June 21-22, while the Singapore National Swimming Championships, which also serves as Olympic qualification, will be held at the OCBC Aquatic Center from June 23-27.
