AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Venom started slowly (0-2) but have now won two home games in a row. One of their greatest leaders is on the offensive and he almost didn’t come back this season.

“When I got the call, I rushed over as quickly as possible,” said Venom head coach Julian Reese. “Seeing him for who he was was pretty scary.”

“It was kind of mind-blowing for me,” said Avery Wright, Venom’s offensive lineman. “It kind of put me in a mental state where I thought I was a little alone because the first thing they told me was you can’t play football.”

Wright lost almost everything last fall. He was found lying on the floor after falling into a coma.

“I got a lot out of this game,” said Wright. “I was diagnosed with diabetes in September and almost died. To be honest, my body was pale and everything. “

After improving his blood pressure and passing his physical exam, Wright takes the medication off and is back in the field.

“Like I said, we play football with a passion and no one has that passion like Avery,” said Venom team-mate Undra Hendrix.

“Avery is a different breed,” said Kendrick Bournes, Venom Defensive Coordinator. “I mean, he has that rare combination of size and just really good feet.”

“They know he fixed things and he’s working on it now, so that’s the most important thing,” Reese said. “Go through such a process and then work towards a better life and better health now.”

This obstacle helped Avery find the Wright mindset. He developed patience in teaching his students with special needs and strengthened his relationship with God.

“I treat it (playing the piano) like football,” Wright said. “It doesn’t matter who is in the church. I play for God because God took me out of all situations and blessed me with this gift. “

In return, Wright received the gift of running out of the Venom Tunnel for another season.

“Went on the sidelines and cried. I was just completely happy with my performance to come back,” said Wright. “As I said, never take this game for granted. I don’t play for the money and I don’t play for the fame. I play for how the game got me. You never know what people are going through. “

Venom is off this weekend and their next game is scheduled for Saturday, July 10th at 6pm. Amarillo welcomes the Arlington Longhorns for their final regular season game.
