The colorful fitness area is intended to promote wellness, exercise and commitment in the community. “Fitness is a vital pillar of health, and anything we can do to make it more fun, beautiful, and accessible to everyone is an asset to This Community,” said Silbrina Wright, executive director of the Greater Jackson Arts Council. On Tuesday, Jackson City Council accepted the partnership with the National Fitness Campaign. The project raised many eyebrows in the city, and even the director of parks and recreation called it a “golden opportunity” for the city. “We have a golden opportunity to turn one of Jackson’s most conveniently located and highly visible public parks into one I see a citywide pull-up competition in our future,” said Ison Harris, director of parks and recreation for the City of Jackson. According to the Greater Jackson Arts Council, Keith Haring (1958-) 1990) is synonymous with public art and charitable works. “If the name Keith Haring doesn’t click right away, his artwork will have resonance. His designs are ubiquitous internationally. This courtyard will become part art gallery, part outdoor gym, and completely his point of pride for Jackson,” said Janet Scott, advisor to Great Jackson Arts Council. The project is expected to be built and operational by the end of the calendar year.
