MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) – Thanksgiving is about being grateful for the joyous events in life.

It is also celebrated by spending this holiday with family, friends and food.

Some local organizations know that many people don’t have this chance for the Christmas season so they wanted in every possible way to give back something that was for JP Fitness something that was in their wheelhouse.

“The Mankato Turkey Trot 5K is an event that we wanted to host. Since it has never happened in Mankato, ”said Jon Jamieson, President of JP Fitness.

Members and non-members were invited to take part in the three mile run.

JP Fitness expected about 50 people to show up, but there were 70 people by 8 a.m. start time.

“Somehow, motivate them to do a bit of activity and have fun with their family before the holidays,” Jamieson said.

The turkey trot was more than just a way to move around before the festivities.

The runners also brought non-perishable groceries with them as part of the community-wide Extra Trimmings event.

The event promotes a Thanksgiving workout with a partner gym or a little extra when you check out at both Hy-Vee locations in Mankato as well as the Hy-Vee Islands.

All proceeds go to the ECHO Food Shelf to help those most in need.

“I think it’s very important that everyone understands that today is a day of giving and being grateful for everything you have. And what you can do for others, ”said Jamieson.

There were other local businesses that wanted to join in all the fun.

“We also have sponsors in town like All-Star Nutrition, Vibe Nutrition, DYM Athletics, River Valley Running, all of whom have donated some prizes and freebies. Part of our goody bags for runners that are coming out today, ”said Jamieson.
