It’s no surprise that “New Year, New You” is one of the most common resolutions.

Local fitness trainers and coaches say it’s all about finding the right workout that suits everyone, as not all people are built equal.

Here are three Salinas trainers that bring something unique to start fitness resolutions on the right foot.

The gym owner is none other than coach Daniel Corona, a longtime boxer who shares his passion for the sport with others in the community who want to try something new.

His love for sports dates back to the early 1990s. Corona said he was inspired to teach the sport in hopes of helping people improve their physical health. He also uses his business to give back to young people in need through special courses for them and even to collect advocates and donations.

From learning the basic rules and strokes to cross-fit workouts, cardio and circuit training – according to Corona, these intensive workouts are effective for both amateurs and professionals.

“They love it and they hate it,” Corona said. “Everyone is always happy to come in and they love the pain, but it’s a good thing.”

The facility has a box with punching bags, weights, cardio equipment and two boxing rings.

Rock Boxing Gym in Salinas, California offers a variety of classes aimed at burning maximum calories, improving flexibility, empowering people of all ages, and refurbishing them.

One of the most effective workouts for clients is the boxing exercises.

“You keep hitting the sack for 20 to 30 seconds and then rotating with your partner. In an hour of this workout, you can burn between 900 and 1,200 calories per workout, ”he said.

The gym is equipped with 24 different training stations so customers can move around and try out different exercises. Corona explains that people who repeat the same exercise routines often get tired and ultimately fall off the car.

Martial arts master Curtis Sells teaches Taekwondo, Karate and Kung Fu to children and families in Salinas, California.

Fans of the Netflix show Cobra Kai will be delighted to know that martial arts training is close at hand at Curtis Sells Martial Arts School in Salinas.

Instructor Curtis Sells is a former master and teaches a mix of Taekwondo, Japanese hard style karate, and Chinese kung fu soft style.

His love for sports began in early childhood after watching a Bruce Lee movie with his father in the 1970s. Sells says that Lee became his idol and that he ended up training with some of the people who once trained Lee.

“I wanted to do the things he could do. This control over his body and this focus that he had, ”Sells said. “He made the martial arts look beautiful.”

It wasn’t long after he took up the sport that he developed a passion for teaching it and for the past few decades has attended his courses all over the Central Coast. Today, its Salinas location caters to people of all ages, but has a particular focus on young children.

Many of his young students, he said, are needy teenagers who have been referred by doctors or teachers to help with things like improving behavior and learning basic life skills.

“It doesn’t necessarily teach them how to fight, but rather about self development, discipline, respect, self-confidence and self-esteem,” he says. “It’s a way of life. It’s very different from other sports that are all about competition. This is more about the self.”

From learning blocks, kicks, and self-defense to more focus and focus, Sells says his martial arts classes are a great start for anyone on the path to fitness and self-improvement. Even students aged 4 and over have achieved their purple belt with their training.

“A person can do it for a few months, but he will benefit from everything he learns for a lifetime,” he said. “If you stick with it, you’ll just have a lot more fun.”

In terms of membership and pricing, Sells works with families to find the right timetables and prices for their needs, adding that classes there cost less than the average martial arts class.

Classes for children, teenagers and adults take place Monday through Thursday and usually start between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on the schedule customers want to set.

Sells recommends at least two practice days per week and competition opportunities are available to anyone interested.
