The Center for Science in the Public Interest works with 30 organizations from different communities in 23 states and Washington, DC to drive policy change around food and nutrition. The partnerships are made possible by a generous grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies.
The grant-funded partner organizations are at the forefront of CSPI’s national advocacy campaigns, working to advance innovative strategies to support public health, especially for low-income and color communities, and to increase the availability of nutritious food and drink in schools. Restaurants and grocery stores.
Unhealthy eating contributes to an estimated 529,000 deaths each year in the United States, mainly from heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. The new partnerships will accelerate the work of CSPI to engage diverse populations for healthier eating environments in the following areas:
- Strengthening the nutritional and health benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- Support of a healthy and free school lunch and breakfast for all students.
- Make sure restaurants have healthy options for children.
- Including calorie counts on online menus and grocery delivery services, and exploring the menu icons for salt and sugar in restaurants.
- Promoting healthy foods and beverages in grocery store displays, e.g. B. at cash registers, displays at the end of the aisle and at the entrances to the store.
“There has never been a more pressing time to restore and rebuild healthier and more resilient communities,” said CSPI President Peter Lurie. “Our state and local partners will fuel this campaign with sugary beverages and other public health levers to promote public health, eradicate racial gaps, and combat the industry’s aggressive marketing to children.”
