Seitan (say it with us: say-tan) is a tough and elastic protein that is colloquially called “wheat meat”. A staple of hippie culture and beyond, seitan can be used in place of animal protein in a range of delicious dishes – from juicy sausages to messy pulled pork sandwiches. Find it at the local grocery store (try brands like Upton’s Naturals, Sweet Earth, and Gardein) or make it at home. Wheat meat ready, here are seven vegan seitan recipes you must try!
The edgy vegetables
1. Spicy seitan buffalo wings by The Edgy Veg
Sure, cauliflower wings are fine, but if you fancy something to chew on, seitan is the way to go. The Edgy Veg’s Candice Hutchings brings the chicken flavor to the fore by flavoring her seitan with poultry seasoning (yes, they’re vegan) and tahini. The chicken seitan is covered with heavy batter, soaked in buffalo sauce and then baked until crispy. After polishing it off, you’ll need a napkin.

2. Seitan vegan sausages by Love It Vegan
When you’re biting into a juicy, grilled sausage, you want something meaty, not gummy. Seitan offers that essential texture and makes for a vegan frank that’s sturdy enough to withstand the heat of the grill. Snuggle these plant-based dogs in split, toasty buns and sprinkle them with Dijon mustard.

Seitan beats your meat
3. Vegan pork sandwich with coleslaw and french fries by Seitan Beats Your Meat
Make it easy for yourself and buy some pre-made seitan for that stout grip. Throw together some homemade vegan coleslaw and pile your barbecue-smeared seitan with this crispy-cool salad and some salty chips. The result is the ultimate texture feeling of hot, cold, creamy, crispy, soft, salty and smoky in one delicious bite.

4th Incredibly vegan chicken and waffles from Thanks Berry Much
This sweet and savory combo is a project, but if you can’t find plant-based chicken and waffles at a vegan-friendly restaurant near you, it’s well worth the effort. Crispy seitan chicken gets a brunch atmosphere when paired with a plate-sized Belgian waffle and a generous dash of spicy maple syrup. You definitely need a knife and fork for this.

Sugar & Jagdwurst
5. Vegan Reuben sandwich of sugar & Jagdwurst
For the stranger, the key elements of a Reuben sandwich are corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, and rye bread. This recipe nails all five essential components with completely homemade vegan ingredients. The scratch version is really worth doing at least once, but to save time, thinly sliced, store-bought seitan will do (or check out this vegan corned beef from Mrs. Goldfarb’s).

Vegan Atlas
6th Vegan mushroom and seitan stroganoff from Vegan Atlas
Lower a fork into this filling bowl of noodle-y umami goodness. Meaty seitan goes well with tender mushrooms and al dente fettuccine, everything covered in a light vegan cream sauce. This dish is perfect for a date or a family dinner. It’s one of the few dishes that is romantic and kid-friendly in equal measure.

Well vegan
7th Seitan portobello stew from Well Vegan
Hello, one-pot wonder. For those whose cooking skills don’t go far beyond dump-and-stir, this seitan-based stew is a solid place to start. It’s thick, calming, and nutritious with large chunks of tasty veggies and meaty chunks of vegan protein. Enjoy it with a fist-sized piece of French bread.
