S.With screens around us all day, you’ve probably seen the TikTok viral video touting the benefits of rosemary essential oil for hair, and now you want to smear it on your scalp.

Before you do that though, read on because Amy Anthony, a certified aromatherapist at NYC Aromatica, explains the pros and cons, and how to use it.

What exactly are essential oils?

“Essential oils are extracted from certain parts of plants – that is, from roots, seeds, leaves, flowers, bark, etc. – which we consider medicinal and spiritual herbs,” says Anthony. These aromatic plant parts are distilled to collect their essential oils, which make up a very small percentage of the plant. As a result, it can take several to make a small amount of essential oils, which is why they can be so expensive.

However, as Anthony notes, this does not mean that essential oil can be obtained from it just because a plant has a scented fragrance. “For example, lilac flowers have aromas – molecules that you can smell – but if you send the plant material through the distillation process, you don’t get any essential oil,” she says. This is due to the chemical composition of the flower.

How Can Rosemary Essential Oil Help Hair?

The use of rosemary essential oil to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss is a well-known Mexican practice. Rosemary essential oil feels cooling when applied to the skin, but according to Anthony, it actually stimulates the tissues. This is part of what rosemary essential oil is good for your hair and scalp. “I like to do this from a herbalist perspective,” says Anthony. “When properly diluted in a carrier oil and applied to the scalp, rosemary essential oil cleanses and stimulates topically – it increases blood flow to the scalp.”

Here it is important to understand the difference between an aromatherapy application and a cosmetic application. While you may see rosemary essential oil on the ingredient list of hair care products, the oil is diluted “more for” fragrance purposes, “explains Anthony, so the amount of rosemary essential oil in the cosmetic formula is much less than in a therapeutic product.

Who can benefit?

“To be honest, anyone who wants to use stimulant herbs to purify and wake up their scalp,” says Anthony. “It’s often cited for use with darker hair versus lighter hair, but I don’t see a need to make that distinction when working with the essential oil.” She says these distinctions are more likely to apply to herbal conditioners, which are made by boiling rosemary plants in water, which can darken hair.

How do you use rosemary essential oil on your hair?

“As a practitioner, I would make a product for a customer, such as a scalp oil,” says Anthony. The rosemary would be diluted in a carrier oil and it may contain other essential oils. “This would be applied on a schedule and have a dilution rate where rosemary can make up three percent of the total formula,” says Anthony. (Note: this is a lot of essential oil.)

At home, you can mix two to three drops of rosemary essential oil in a few tablespoons of carrier oil, such as coconut or almond oil, and then massage it gently into your scalp. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wash off with shampoo.

Anthony recommends using rosemary essential oil on your hair three times a week for two to three weeks. “The key is using it consistently to stimulate the scalp up to a point,” she says. “The long-term use of essential oils can lead to sensitization if they are not properly diluted or in high – e. B. 5% or more – dilutions are used over a long period of time, “she explains.

Who Shouldn’t Use Rosemary Essential Oil?

“Rosemary essential oil is contraindicated for people with epilepsy,” says Anthony. “That’s because it contains the chemicals camphor and eucalyptol, which are found in several other essential oils – both of which cleanse and stimulate,” she explains.

Also, it shouldn’t be used on infants or children under the age of five – it is best to let your baby’s hair grow in by itself.
