Gluten-Free Recipes from Sift: Baked Apple Cider Donuts

Before I lived in the United States, I had never heard of Baked Apple Cider Donuts. I grew up with a crazy approach to donuts, or “donuts” (thanks Tim Hortons). I remember one of my neighbors mentioning them to me and I thought, “I love cider, but it’s almost impossible to find gluten-free donuts.” So I started looking for a cider and donut recipe.

It turns out that baking is a lot easier than frying when it comes to making cider donuts. When we think of donuts, we usually think of the fried donut that has that shiny glaze on top. But these are not these types of donuts. The nice thing about the apple cider donut is that you don’t miss a thing while baking – I think the opposite. They allow the donut to be more cake-like, slightly denser, and full of flavor (without all of the mess).

This gluten-free baked apple cider donut recipe is super easy, more than delicious, and ready in under 30 minutes! This guide will show you step by step how to prepare that perfect seasonal treat.

  • Preparation time: 10 mins
  • Cooking time: 12 minutes
  • Total time: 22 minutes
  • Yield: 5 dozen 1x

What about using an air fryer?

Again, just bake them. There’s less mess, less fuss, and the results are super delicious.

The mysterious origins of the apple cider donuts?

First introduced by the Donut Corporation of America (DCA), cider donuts made their way into the mainstream donut world in the 1950s. The DCA was founded in the 1920s by Adolph Levitt, a Russian immigrant. Cider donuts were initially considered a seasonal treat (as the cider was easily available in the fall), but now that our grocery stores and cider are open year-round, they no longer have to be an autumn treat! You can enjoy them all year round.

Can you use apple juice for donuts instead of cider? Are you healthy?

Traditionally, you’ve wanted to use apple cider for these donuts, but if you can’t get your hands on one, you can add apple juice to it. All you have to do is boil it down to enhance the apple flavor (I’ll discuss this below.)

And one perk of this baked apple cider donut recipe is that they are significantly healthier than any fried donut!

What you need to make baked apple cider donuts:

  1. 2 cups of gluten-free flour (I like King Arthur for this recipe)
  2. 1/2 cup white sugar
  3. 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  4. 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  5. 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  6. 3 tbsp butter (melted)
  7. 1/2 cup of milk
  8. 1 1/2 cups apple cider (you’ll reduce this to 1/2 cup)
  9. 1 egg
  10. 5 tbsp cinnamon
  11. 1 teaspoon vanilla
