Summer time is for power, velocity and diet

Fish out of the water – I’m a Cape guy, but mostly a kid person, so on June 1st I went out onto the screeching green lawn of the Sussex Academy, which was covered by more white lounge chairs than the Love Boat, to snap photos of seven high-ranking athletes playing the Letters of commitment signed to participate in college sports. That ceremony was followed by year-end sports awards, but I was out there like a pilot boat going to the Lewes Canal Dock. Michelle Archer, Rehoboth Buddy Walk Chair, daughter of Butch and sister of Kyle – her mother Brenda is the Cape District Assistant School Nurse – and the wife of the boys lacrosse coach at Sussex Academy Justin Hetherington, gave me a heads up so I rolled west like a covered wagon to “cover” the event. Justin from Annapolis played his college lacrosse at Elon. He was voted Henlopen Conference Coach of the Year and is withdrawing from coaching because it is simply too difficult for him to get from his job to training. Here’s the fun part: he works as an appraiser for Schell Brothers. Justin’s hands off too Westcox, played high school ball at Boys Latin in Baltimore, grade ’99, and was a long-stick middie at Washington College, graduating in 2004. West runs the family business in Milton and works as a substitute teacher at the Sussex Academy.

Steve bastianelli Steve is the sports director of the Sussex Academy and always has his little camera with him. He’s cool and efficient, pleasant enough, and I’ve never spoken to the guy before. For the exterior signatures and the awards show, he’d wired it tight but loose enough for everyone to have a good time. Steve won three state titles as a Sussex Central Wrestler: £ 105 in 1974 and £ 119 in 1975 and 1976. As Head Wrestling Coach at Saint Mark’s, Steve won 10 state titles in 1986, ’87, ’88, ’91, ’92, ’95, ’97, ’98, ’99 and 2002. During that time Steve produced 58 state champions. I don’t blame him for not talking to me. I do not have anything. And that’s just the skinny – there’s a lot more.

Blinded me with science – For me, the fitness triad for competitive athletes is strength, speed and nutrition. A devotion to these three elements and their fusion leads to better performance and endurance and the ability to explode with maximum force. An angry focus between the lines is required and not everyone can get there. Maybe nobody can, but all athletes can increase their chances by working hard off the field. Nowhere in what I’ve written does it say, “You have to fight for your right to party.”

The dance – Naomi Osaka is one of the best tennis players in the world, valued at $ 50 million. And she doesn’t want to do the dance after the game with the “tennis media” because it’s forced and faked. This applies to all pressers after the game, where the rule requires the athlete to appear. I found the unspoken feeling in the locker room or media room condescending from the media side, eliciting short answers from athletes, most of whom don’t know the first names of the people who have paid for their sports coverage. In the NFL, you can sit in the press box and just wait for the quotes to be delivered to your laptop after the game, and after moving the soft pretzel aside, you can copy and paste it into your story. When was the last time a normal person with solid self-esteem wanted to ask questions of a person who wasn’t interested in talking to them?

Cutouts – I carefully plan my summer sports calendar by writing down the events that I definitely won’t tell. The NCAA’s 64-team Division I baseball tournament begins Friday, June 4th. Virginia, with Zack and Jake Gelof on Friday, June 4th at noon in South Carolina on ESPN2. Region number 1, Old Dominion, faces fourth-placed Jacksonville, The Liberty Flames, with capes at 7 p.m. Mason Fluharty and David Erickson on the list that received a great offer and will be released on Friday in the Knoxville, Tenn area. play against ACC Champion Duke. Tennessee will host Wright State in the other regional game. The Salisbury Seagulls baseball team travels to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the Division III College World Series. This tournament also starts on Friday June 4th. There are five Henlopen Conference players in the Salisbury roster. Cape Teacher of the Year 2022 Maura Johnson scored three goals in Cape’s first national championship in girls’ lacrosse in 2009, beating St. Andrew’s 11-7. She was a sophomore student. The Beach Blast Girls’ Lacrosse tournament will return to Cape the weekend of June 25th this year. There are typically 100 teams over three days, with Friday devoted to middle school athletes. Go ahead now, idiot!
