As a child, Laura Micetich was nicknamed “Iron Giantess” because she was taller and taller than her peers. “They thought it was a compliment, but I thought it was the worst name in the world,” she says. In a recent episode of Truly’s Brand New Me, Laura explains how her low self-esteem was manifested in binge eating, which resulted in her weighing 320 pounds at her heaviest.

“I turned my brain off and shoveled so much of it in my mouth until I imagined I never wanted to eat again,” she says. “And then, about 20 or 30 minutes later, I started again and finished the rest.”

Realizing she needed to change something, Laura started exercising at home by following videos she found on YouTube. “I made a promise to myself that by the end of the week or month I would be able to go through the entire YouTube video without a break,” she says. “When I got through the whole video, I immediately went across campus, signed up for my college gym, and fell in love with bodybuilding.”

While she expected to find the gym environment intimidating, Laura was pleasantly surprised to learn that she was actually incredibly strong at 6’1 and 320 pounds. Soon she was doing six workouts a week consisting of 90 minutes of weights and 20 minutes of cardio. She lost 100 pounds over the course of the first year and is now around 180 pounds.

After losing weight and discovering her passion for fitness, Laura decided to pursue this career and now uses her own experiences to help other people set and achieve their own health and fitness goals.

“I think it’s really easy to look back and sugar-coat things and make it look like it’s really easy,” she says. “I think many times we just have to be ready to keep fighting and fight for ourselves and realize that this fight wasn’t the only fight… I’m really proud of myself and the girl who tried in the beginning. “
