Transamerica Institute® offers free cookbooks promoting healthy eating
THE ANGEL, August 19, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Two-thirds of US workers (66 percent) are concerned about their physical health. However, according to a recent survey, only 56 percent say they eat healthy regularly.1 To help people during these challenging times, the nonprofit Transamerica Institute® has published updated editions of four free cookbooks in its Healthier Traditions CookbookTM series, including Quick & Easy, Italian, soul food and American classics.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked widespread concerns about health, family and friends, and finances. Given the high levels of stress, it was easy for many people to choose not-so-good foods, “said Catherine Collinson, CEO and President of the Transamerica Institute.
The recipes in the Healthier traditional cookbook have been expertly created by nutritionists and offer healthier ingredient changes to increase the nutritional value – without sacrificing taste or enjoyment. These recipes are high in protein, fiber, and healthy fats to support various dietary preferences. Many of the recipes suggest vegetarian substitutions as well.
“As we continue to deal with the pandemic, we can eat in ways that satisfy our cravings and nourish our bodies. Our cookbooks offer recipes for delicious and nutritious meals that support wellbeing, ”said Mihaela Vincze, a public health expert at the Transamerica Institute.
Healthier Traditions: Quick and Easy offers 19 recipes made from common pantry ingredients in 20 minutes or less. It includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert, and features recipes like overnight oats, mashed chickpea and avocado sandwiches, Southwest pan, and banana “nice” cream. These recipes are also wholesome and plant-oriented, and encourage more vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.
Healthier Traditions: Italian includes 18 popular Italian classics like lasagna and bolognese, with recipes that use vegetables as possible meat substitutes. The dishes are just as aromatic, but more nutritious. Many of the recipes also feature more whole grains and less sugar while using all of the whole food ingredients. Additionally, some of the recipes meet specific nutritional needs by being naturally gluten-free or offering vegetarian modifications.
The story goes on
Healthier Traditions: Soul Food was developed in collaboration with the Association of Black Women Physicians and features 19 Mediterranean recipes such as fried catfish, gumbo, black-eyed peas and peach cobbler. It includes suggestions for substitutions to make many of the recipes vegetarian or vegan, as well as replacing deep-frying with frying or baking. This cookbook also provides interesting historical facts about soul food.
Healthier Traditions: American Classics includes 19 popular home cooked dishes such as macaroni and cheese, New England clam chowder, meatloaf, Philly cheesesteak, and shepherd’s pie. These recipes contain more vegetables and use less oil, sugar, and salt. The cookbook contains many tips for preparing gluten-free or vegetarian recipes.
Each of the recipes in the Healthier Traditions Cookbook includes nutritional information, evidence-based details, helpful tips, and modifications for specific nutritional needs (where possible). This information explains how making healthy food choices can be a achievable lifestyle change.
“The Healthier Traditions Cookbooks are designed to inspire home cooking in a fun, creative and tasty way – and to show that healthy eating is easy to incorporate and can support positive behavior change. The recipes can be used by people of all cooking skills to create healthy and affordable meals, “said Christina Badaracco, a registered dieter who served as a consultant on the cookbooks.
All cookbooks in the series are free and can be downloaded.
